Applications vs. Learning - What should we master first?

Fundamentals of IMD

I read this blog by IMD instructor about learning IMD applications vs. learning how to learn. Before I started attending Aii, I wasn’t sure what my future plans would consist of. I had a broad idea that I wanted to work with computers. When the famous Myspace came about, I got a real interest in coding. So I decided I would like to build and maintain websites! When researching what it takes to build a website, I found a variety of languages, applications and software being used in the construction. Of course I quickly noticed that in order for me to reach my goal of a web designer I must master all these applications! Therefore, I registered at Aii.

Now since starting at Aii I have quickly learned that learning these applications is only a small process in the IMD program. So if learning these applications is only a portion, what else does IMD consist of?! As Mr. Batchelder stated, these tools are consistently changing to something simpler and better. And where does that leave me? Back at the beginning learning how to use these applications! So begins the never ending circle of learning.

But there is a way! A way to learn what new tools are available for use, what programs/applications are currently being used and what people want from those applications! And its called social networking. A very simple term but a hard action to pull off for some. Everything about networking, whether is be at a convention or through blogging, is social. Individuals coming together to share information and skills that relate to their industry or field. Just think of the useful and even non useful information you’ve picked up just from talking to friends. We are learning different things EVERYDAY. So why not take that and apply it to your internet learning. Once you begin, you will see that it isn’t much different at all. Beginning a conversation is as simple as replying to a blog post or asking a question. Once the communication line is open, you have endless possibilities of what you will learn next.
